What a 50 gallon installation quote should cover
A water heater installation quote is the price to remove the old tank, set a new one, reconnect water, gas or electric, vent it if it burns gas, and test it. A 50 gallon tank is the common size for a three or four bedroom house, and the heater itself is often less than half the story.
The rest is labor and small parts: a temperature and pressure relief valve, discharge piping, flexible connectors, a drain pan and a shutoff valve. A quote that lists only the tank leaves you guessing.
Quote line items side by side
Use this table to check that two quotes are pricing the same job. A low total with half the lines missing is not a lower price, it is a different job.
| Line item | What it covers | Why it moves the price |
|---|---|---|
| The heater | A 50 gallon gas or electric tank, with its efficiency and warranty terms | Gas and electric models differ, and so do burner type and warranty length |
| Labor | Draining and removing the old unit, setting and leveling the new one, making every connection | Tight closets, attics and stairs add hands and hours |
| Parts | Relief valve, discharge pipe, connectors, shutoff valve, gas flex or electrical whip | Old fittings that will not reconnect cleanly get replaced |
| Venting | Flue pipe and draft hood on gas models | Corroded or undersized venting has to be corrected, not reused |
| Expansion control | An expansion tank where the cold supply has a check valve, pressure reducing valve or backflow preventer | Adds a part and a fitting, but protects the new tank |
| Permit and haul-away | City permit paperwork and disposal of the old tank | Permit handling and disposal are sometimes bundled and sometimes billed alone |
How the labor is figured
Labor on a straight swap in an open garage is the easy case. The plumber shuts off water and fuel, drains the old tank through a garden hose, disconnects it, and sets the new one on a pan with fresh connectors.
Time goes up when the heater sits in an attic or a tight closet and has to be carried down. It also goes up when the old tank is corroded in place, the shutoff valve will not close, or the gas line or flue needs correcting before the new unit can run.
Gas versus electric labor
A gas heater adds a gas connection, a leak check at every joint and a vent that has to draw properly. An electric heater skips the vent but needs the right breaker and wire gauge for its element load.
Who should be doing the work
Replacing a heater touches water, fuel and, on gas models, combustion. Ask the installer for a Georgia plumbing license number and look it up through the Georgia Secretary of State license verification site, verify.sos.ga.gov, before work starts.
What moves the final bill
No two installs cost the same because no two water heater closets are the same. These are the factors that change the number.
Fuel and model
A gas tank with a power vent costs differently than an atmospheric gas tank or an electric one.
Access
A garage floor is quick. An attic or basement stairwell is slower and may need extra labor.
Code corrections
Venting, relief piping or gas piping that no longer meets current rules must be fixed as part of the job.
Added parts
An expansion tank, a drain pan or a new shutoff valve add to the parts list.
Timing
Same-day appointments are available when the schedule allows, and after-hours calls can be priced differently than a booked weekday slot.
Homeowners insurance generally covers sudden water damage from a burst tank, not the cost of replacing a worn-out heater. Check your policy for how it treats appliance age and failure.

Why a 50 gallon label is not the whole sizing answer
Tank size is only part of how well a heater serves a household. Georgia's state minimum plumbing code now includes a residential sizing table based on first hour rating, which counts how much hot water a unit can deliver in its first hour of heavy use, and it ties that rating to the number of bedrooms and bathrooms.
The first hour rating is printed on the yellow energy label, and it matters more than the gallon number. Ask your installer to size by that rating or the manufacturer's instructions, not by the size already in the closet.
Suwanee note: permits and gas rules before the install
The City of Suwanee building permits page lists plumbing changes and water heater replacement among the work that needs a building permit. The city inspections line, 770-945-8996, can tell you how to schedule it. Ask your installer who pulls the permit and whether it is on the quote, then keep the paperwork for a future sale.
Georgia's state plumbing code amendments, published by the Department of Community Affairs, say gas-fired water heaters and their venting fall under the International Fuel Gas Code instead of the plumbing chapter. In practice that means the vent run and gas connection are checked as their own part of the job, so a quote for a gas unit should mention both.
The same code says a storage water heater needs a thermal expansion control device when its cold supply passes through a check valve, pressure reducing valve or backflow preventer. Gwinnett County Water Resources notes that the home pressure reducing valve belongs to the homeowner, so if your house has one, an expansion tank is likely a line item on your quote.
Per Gwinnett County Water Resources, local water hardness runs about 1.05 to 1.87 grains per gallon, which is very soft. Scale buildup on the tank bottom is therefore a slower problem here than in hard-water areas, so do not let a quote add a water softener to the heater job just to protect it.
What to ask before you accept a quote
These questions turn a number on paper into a job you understand.
- Is the permit included, and who schedules the city inspection?
- Does the total include the relief valve, discharge piping, connectors and a drain pan?
- Is an expansion tank included, and if not, why not?
- What happens to the old tank, and is haul-away listed?
- What is the first hour rating of the unit being installed?
- Will the gas connection and vent be tested before the crew leaves?
Gas smell during an install or any time
If you smell gas at any point, leave the building right away and call the gas utility, for most homes Atlanta Gas Light at 877.427.4321, or 911, from a safe distance. Do not flip switches, use a phone inside or try to find the leak yourself. Call a plumber only after the gas utility says the area is safe.
A smell after a recent install is a reason to leave, not to wait and see.

If your tank is leaking now and you are deciding between a fix and a new unit, the water heater replacement page covers that decision, and a tank that is only misbehaving may be a water heater repair. If you are comparing tank and tankless setups, the tankless water heater page lays out the tradeoffs.
Homes across the Gwinnett line in Duluth and Lawrenceville use the same 24/7 line, and the permit office will differ by city, so ask the local inspections office where you live.
According to the City of Suwanee's building permits page, water heater replacement needs a building permit, and the inspections office is at 770-945-8996. The Georgia amendments to the International Plumbing Code also call for a thermal expansion control device in certain setups.
Installation cost questions
Often it is the biggest part you control. The tank price is set by the manufacturer, while labor depends on access, fuel type and what must be corrected on the old connections.
Not by much in labor. The bigger tank can need a larger closet or stronger platform, but the connections and the work are the same.
The City of Suwanee building permits page lists water heater replacement as work needing a building permit. Call the city inspections line at 770-945-8996 and ask your installer who handles the paperwork.
It involves water, fuel and, on gas models, venting. Ask the city about permit rules before starting, and consider a licensed plumber for gas connections and venting.
Usually because one leaves out parts, venting corrections, the permit or haul-away. Ask both to list the same line items so you can compare them directly.
